Job Description

BACKGROUND:


The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world's worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 50 countries and 28 US cities to restore safety, dignity, and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. Domestically, our 28 offices across the US ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.


SCOPE OF INTERN WORK:


This internship is an excellent opportunity for a current graduate/undergraduate student to gain exposure to the operations of a large international organization while practicing and applying Grant Management methods to ensure continued financial support for the IRC in Salt Lake City.


The Grants Management Intern will work closely with the Grants Manager on maintaining documents and databases with up-to-date information, supporting scheduling and reminders, engaging in prospect research, and providing support to create program materials.


RESPONSIBILITIES:


(Scope could be further tailored depending on the final match of intern-to-opportunity)


•Engage in prospecting research following IRC's method and strategy to engage potential new funders


•Support Grants Manager in maintaining and updating information in local grants database to ensure accurate tracking and project management.


•Support Grants Manager in scheduling grant-related meetings and providing programs with reminders about upcoming deadlines.


•Develop external-facing program materials (such as staff and donor-facing one-pagers, and boilerplate language documents for programs), involving coordination between program staff and updating information. This will result in the creative design of materials distributed among donors, community partners, and internal IRC Staff.


•Provide support as needed in other areas of identified grants management projects, as feasible.


COMMITMENT


-Work a minimum of 10 hours per week for 3 months.


oFirst Cohort: August 19th - December 6th


oSecond Cohort: September 9th - December 20th


LEARNING OBJECTIVES:


1.Student will gain experience in grant management and funder engagement principles, which is a crucial skill to move up in the non-profit sector.


2.Students will learn more about the pre-award process for building a funding portfolio in a non-profit.


3.Student will learn the basics of proposal development and play a key role in ensuring proactive responses to business development needs.


4.Student will develop an in-depth understanding of IRC Resettlement, Asylum, & Integration programming.


5.Student will gain experience drafting materials that are donor and staff facing.

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS:


•Currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree, or recent graduate


•Students pursuing degrees in the fields of communications, marketing, public relations, nonprofit management, business, or other related fields may be particularly interested in this position and are encouraged to apply


•Comfort with research, organizing content, and liaising with staff.


•Strong writing and communication skills in English.


•Excellent organization skills, strong communication and interpersonal skills, and ability to collaborate effectively


•Ability to use basic functions of Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office programs


•Reliable, self-motivated, independent, and able to take on a project assignment and ask for help when needed.


This position reports to the Grants Manager.
